2008 Events:

Arbour Day – June 7

The 11th annual celebration of Arbour Day exemplifi es how the City of Fort St. John, in partnership with the Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) can blend a hands-on event with environmental awareness. Arbour Day combines planting trees—an activity that beautifies a public park—with the awareness of the importance of trees (carbon offset, air purification, water absorption, habitat for wildlife). Every tree is sponsored by a business, organization or individual, planted by volunteers, and maintained by the City. The first year that Arbour Day was celebrated, 46 trees were planted with fewer than 30 volunteers. In 2007, almost 80 volunteers planted 115 trees!

We invite you to participate in the 2008 Arbour Day to help us plant trees in Mathews Park on June 7. To register, contact NEAT at info@neat.bc.ca or call 785-NEAT (6328).

Garden Debris Drop Off – May 24 & 25

The annual collection of garden debris for composting is set for May 24 & 25 at the North Peace Leisure Pool parking lot. In conjunction with the Public Works Day, the Flower Pot Auction, the Flower Planting Bee, you can also bring down your debris and learn to reduce water consumption and get recipes to combat pests and weeds in the garden, naturally.

Flower Pot Auction – May 24

The Fort St. John Community Arts Council in partnership with the City of Fort St. John lines the streets each year with 100 hand-painted fl ower pots overfl owing with beautiful blooms. Half of the pots are new each year, and the older half are sold at a public auction after they have been on the streets for two years.

Be sure to get your very own pot at this year’s Flower Pot Auction, set for Centennial Park on Saturday, May 24. All proceeds of the auction go to the Ecole Central Elementary PAC, which is a member group of the Arts Council.

The City of Fort St. John provides the pots and the planting of the flowers, and the Arts Council fi nds the artists to decorate them, and solicits sponsorship of $100 for each pot. The entire program raises funds forthe arts in Fort St. John and adds unparalleled beauty to our downtown city streets.

Flower Planting Bee – May 25

This event is set for May 25, and is designed for any age from 2 years to 92 years. It is an event that contributes to beautifying the community and assists the public works staff in their annual spring activities.
