So you want to become a lifeguard
The North Peace Leisure Pool is always accepting applications from qualified lifeguards and Red Cross lesson instructors. If you are already qualified, email your resume and cover letter to our human resources department at gfika@fortstjohn.ca.
To become a qualified lifeguard you must successfully complete the following courses:
Bronze Cross
National Lifeguard Service
Aquatic Emergency Care
Assistant Water Safety Instructor
Water Safety Instructor
Bronze Star
Provides excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem solving and decision making skills, individually and in partners.
Bronze Medallion
Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers learn to respond to increasingly complex situations involving a conscious or unconscious victim with obstructed airway. It teaches and provides practice and encourages understanding of the four (4) basic principles – judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness.
Pre-requisites: Bronze Star must be a minimum of 13 years of age.
Bronze Cross
Is designed for lifesavers that want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. It teaches the difference between lifeguarding and lifesaving, candidates will practice the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. Bronze cross is a pre-requisite for National Lifeguard Service (NLS) and Red Cross Water Safety Instructor courses at the North Peace Leisure Pool.
Pre-requisites: Bronze Medallion, must be a minimum of 14 years of age.
National Lifeguard Service
Take your lifesaving training to the next level. The NLS award builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge and values taught in all of the lifesaving awards. The focus is to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. The NLS lifeguards’ primary role is in the prevention of emergency situations and, where necessary, the timely and effective resolution of emergencies. The course will prepare candidates to be professional facilitators of safe enjoyable aquatic facilities.
Pre-requisites – current bronze cross, current CPR C, standard first aid, must be a minimum of 16years old.
Aquatic Emergency Care
Take your lifesaving to the next level! If you are planning to be a professional lifeguard or looking for more comprehensive first aid land lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care will give you the edge. Taught by certified Lifesaving Society First Aid Instructors, AEC provides hands-on training in the care of injuries and illness common to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings. Learn how to recognize and treat injuries including head and spinal, bone and joint, abdominal and chest, burns, obstructed airways’, and other common medical emergencies. AEC is Standard First Aid equivalent and includes CPR-C certification.

Assistant Water Safety Instructor
This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course. The course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision, and feedback. Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching and through individual study assignments. Upon completion of the course, candidates are certified as Assistant Water Safety Instructors. Once certified, Assistant Water Safety Instructors have two years to become Water Safety Instructors.
Water Safety Instructor
The Water Safety Instructor course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum: Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and Aqua Adults programs. The Course focuses on how to effectively apply the information learned in the AWSI course to the Red Cross Swim programs. Other topics include instructional emergency response skills and stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies. Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours of practical teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as Water Safety Instructors. To remain valid, Water Safety Instructor status must be recertified every two years.
Fitness Theory
This course will provide information on how to keep yourself and others fit and well in a safety-oriented environment. Topics will include information on bones, muscles, toning, strengthening and gaining flexibility, principles for your circulatory system, safety, exercise ideas and basic nutrition. This course is BCRPA recognized. This course is a prerequisite to the Group Fitness Instructor, Weight Training Instructor, Yoga Fitness Instructor, Third Age and Aquafit Instructor courses.
Aqua Fitness Instructor
This comprehensive course includes the essential tools necessary to design and lead safe, effective aquafitness classes and programs. The course content meets the needs of experienced aquafitness leaders as well as lifeguards, aerobic instructors, personal trainers, coaches, participants and aspiring leaders. This course is a BCRPA approved course.
Pre-Requisites: Successful completion of BCRPA recognized Basic Fitness Theory course.
