Solid Waste Changes Effective September 1, 2007: The Tag-A-Bag System
The purpose behind Tag-a-Bag is to encourage reduction of waste and increase the amount of material that is recycled.
When does the program take effect?
September 1, 2007. After September 1, 2007 each residence will be limited to three bags of garbage per week. Any additional bags put out for residential pick up must be tagged with a sticker purchased from City Hall. Bags of waste without tags attached will not be picked up in the curbside program.
Residents also have the option of taking their bags to the landfill, where they will be charged the appropriate tipping fee.
Do I have to buy tags?
Residents purchase Tag-A-Bag Stickers at City Hall for the fee of $1.00 per tag.
How many tags can I use per week?
Any quantity of bagged garbage will be accepted if it is tagged appropriately.
What is a standard sized garbage bag?
The maximum sized bag accepted is a 67 L bag. There is no minimum size of bag accepted with a tag, however, three grocery sized bags will constitute as the three bag limit.
Why is Fort St John using this program?
Tag- A -Bag Programs are in use in communities all over Canada. Similar programs are cost efficient, well received, and effective in decreasing the volume of garbage. The program is intended to improve the fairness of our waste management services by having those who create more garbage, assist with the costs to dispose of it.
Is the program difficult to follow?
No, all you have to do is ensure that every bag of garbage after your first three has an appropriate tag attached to it. Tags must be placed in a visible area for Waste Management Personnel to easily spot.
Can I put the tag on any item of waste I wish to dispose of?
The tag can only be used on standard sized bags of municipal solid waste (regular household garbage). The Tag-A-Bag program does not apply to large appliances, furniture, bulky yard waste, or other materials not considered household solid waste.
What about recycling?
The City of Fort St. John has local recycling depots available for your convenience to drop off your recycling materials. In addition, the City is working on launching a curbside recycling program in 2008.
