Twenty Tips to Reduce Your Water Use.
- Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
- Run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads only.
- If your machine has settings for smaller loads, use them.
- Don't run the hot water when shaving. You only need a small amount
of water in the sink to rinse your razor.
- Take shorter showers.
- Don't flush garbage down the toilet.
- Turn on the tap only half way when washing your hands.
- Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator for drinking. This will
eliminate the need to run the water until it is cool each time you want
to have a drink.
- Avoid washing the driveway and sidewalks with a hose.
- Water your lawn only when it needs it. Just step on the grass. If it
stays flat, fetch the sprinklers. If it springs back, don't bother
watering.
- Water in early morning hours. Avoid watering in the heat of mid-day
when up to 50% will be lost to evaporation.
- Water long and deep rather than in short bursts.
- Let your lawn dry out between watering.
- If you have an automatic irrigation system, let your lawn dry until
brown spots appear. If there is a pattern to these brown spots, that is
an indication that your irrigation system is not operating efficiently.
- Let your grass grow to a height of 2 ½ inches.
- Leave grass clippings on the lawn. They will break down and provide
your lawn with nitrogen and moisture.
- Reduce some turf areas with decking or rock gardens.
- Choose garden plants that are native to the area. Many of these can
survive with no supplemental watering.
- When washing your car, make sure you have a spray nozzle on the
hose.
- Make water conservation a family project and get everyone involved.
